ACHA Central Regionals
The Hawkeyes put on a show for their fans and patrons in attendance for the
ACHA Regionals this weekend. On Saturday night in the last opening round game
of the day the Hawks win a thriller 4-3 over #5 RMC-Maroon to post the only upset of
the day. After falling behind 2-0 early on in the contest the Hawks storm back with
four unanswered goals and then hold off a furious late rally by the Eagles to win and
advance to the final four games.
A rebound goal by Brian Rooke off a shot from the point by Joey Wheeler and an assist by Sean Phelan
put the Hawks on the board and cut into the Eagles 2-0 lead. The Hawks tie it at 2-2 when Phelan
connects on assists from Alex Johnson and Wheeler. Cam Comeaux scores on the power play from
Wheeler and Graeme Laxton and the Hawks grab their first lead of the game at 3-2 heading into the third
period. Laxton gives the Hawks a 4-2 lead banging home shot attempts from Phelan and Kyle Jacobson
with just over 16:30 remaining in the game. The Eagles close the gap to 4-3 with just under five minutes
remaining but goaltender Will Dodge (37 saves - 40 shots) closes the door the remainder of the game
and the Hawks advance to play Sunday.
On Sunday afternoon the Hawks face the #3 seed in Grand Valley State (top seed in the Region) for a
chance to qualify for the Nationals. The Lakers advanced by thumping the #10 seed St. Thomas (MN.)
Tommies 11-1 on Saturday. GVSU scores first on a power play goal with only three minutes played to
grab the lead 1-0. The Hawks answer when Adam Rankin's shot from the point from Kyle Jacobson finds
its' way through traffic to tie the score at 1-1 ninety seconds later. Two more first period goals by the
Lakers give them the lead at 3-1 as the first period ends. The Lakers add a goal each in the next two
periods to beat the Hawks 5-1 ending their season. Will Dodge turns aside 32 of the 37 Lakers shots.
The Hawks counter with 35 shots of their own but can't solve the Lakers netminder enough to post
anymore tallies.
Overall a great showing for Iowa as they produce the only upset of the tournament and play the top seeded
Lakers evenly throughout the game. Congratulations to the Lakers, who along with Lindenwood
University, advance to the ACHA Nationals.
