Coaching Search Begins
The search for the next head hockey coach at the University of Iowa officially began
yesterday. The IceHawks have begun the process of finding a replacement for the
exiting Kevin Harter by posting the opening and the Hawks will now start searching for
interested candidates. The IceHawks have not set a deadline for the position to be
filled, and team President Mike Coleman said that he was more concerned about
finding the right person for the position, instead of the time it may take.
Coleman said “A lot of people might say I have to hurry up and find someone
(because of recruiting), but I’d much rather take my time and make the right hire than
hurry and make the wrong one." Coleman believes that the recent resurgence and
vast improvements in University of Iowa Hockey, as well as the university's
outstanding academics will be enough to keep recruits interested in choosing Iowa.
Coach Harter posted a record of 30-16-3 in his two seasons at the helm for Iowa. He
led the Hawkeyes to their first-ever conference championship in 2005 and also led
the team to their best conference record ever in 2006 (10-3-1). Harter is vacating the
position due to uncertainty surrounding his ability to fully commit to the team next
season. Both Harter and Coleman hope that Harter will be able to return in a reduced
role, if nothing else. Alternate Captain Rees O'Donnell added "Hopefully Harter will
return next season in some role, because it is never fun to lose a coach, and more
importantly a friend." However, O'Donnell also stated that the vacancy provides the
team with an exciting opportunity to look for a coach who best fits the University of
Iowa Hockey Program and it's lofty aspirations.
Candidates interested in becoming the next head coach of Iowa Hockey should
