IceHawks Miss Chance For Sweep
The Hawkeyes didn't allow Northwestern to take the lead a single time this past
weekend at Coral Ridge Ice Arena, but the Hawks just couldn't put the pesky Wildcats
away. The IceHawks gave the lead away multiple times and allowed the Wildcats to
tie game two of the series and take a point away from the weekend.

On Friday night the Hawks came out in their season opener skating strong but were
held scoreless mid-way through the first period. However, with 7:11 remaining in the
period Iowa senior Craig Bagdon scored the Hawks first goal of the season to take
the lead 1-0. Freshman Ken Galinski added a goal to put the IceHawks up 2-0 at the
end of the period.

Early in the second Andy Arreguin scored to increase the Iowa lead to three.
Northwestern would not give up however and they managed to finally get one past
Iowa goalie Tim Strauch with 2 minutes remaining in the second period. Seven
minutes into the third period Arreguin would score again to put Iowa's lead back at
three.

The Hawks seemed to get a little too comfortable with their lead and their play might
have let up slightly as they allowed Northwestern to battle back and tally two goals
before the game's end. Northwestern's last goal came with 3 minutes remaining and
dramatically increased the pace of the game as the IceHawks fought to hold off what
would have been an impressive Wildcat comeback

Game Points: Bagdon 3, Arreguin 2, Elliott 2, Fruin 2, Galinski 1, Lorenz 1, Norris 1,
O'Donnell 1

On Saturday the scoring opened with Ken Galinski tallying his second goal of the
season six minutes into the game to give Iowa the early lead. However just seventy
seconds later Northwestern came back to tie it up with a goal of their own. Mike Giles
and Kevin Lorenz would score the next two Iowa goals with less than a minute
between them and it appeared the momentum was with the Hawkeyes. But before
Iowa could close out the period the Wildcats would score again and keep it a one
point game.

The second period began with Iowa's Matt Winkler and a Wildcat player being
ejected from the game for fighting three and a half minutes into the period. Winkler's
linemate Joe Scerba then notched a goal to increase the Hawkeyes' lead to two.
Northwestern would continue to battle and scored back-to-back goals to even things
up at four. Jamie Elliott would score to once again give Iowa the lead but Joe Fruin
would be called for holding with 2:30 remaining and the Wildcats would score on the
power play.

After being outscored 3-2 in the second the IceHawks regrouped in the locker room
and came out hard in the third . However they could not manage to get one past the
Northwestern goaltender and the game remained at a 5-5 stalemate. With time
running out the Hawks had one last scoring opportunity but lost the puck in
Northwestern territory as time expired. Both teams fought hard in overtime but neither
team could break through the other's defense and the game ended with each team
earning a point.

Game Points: Galinski 2, Giles 2, Coleman 1, Elliott 1, Fruin 1, Hayes 1, Lorenz 1,
O'Donnell 1, Piper 1, Scerba 1, Schultz 1
