Hawks Cut it Close, but Sweep Robert Morris
The UI Hockey Team pulled off a sweep of the Robert Morris Eagles this weekend,
but just barely. The Hawks showed that they do have the ability to dominate hockey
games at times, but they also showed a lack of consistency that will need to be
improved as the season progresses. Clutch scoring and strong goal tending by Iowa
goalies Tim Strauch and David Barwig are the main reasons that Iowa remains
undefeated after another weekend of MACHA conference play.

On Friday night the Hawks came out strong and outscored Robert Morris 5-1 in the
first period. Keith High came off of the reserve roster to play defense for an
ill-stricken Jimmy Hayes and notched the Hawks first goal five minutes into the game.
Only 40 seconds later Iowa's Rees O'Donnell would tally his first goal of the season
on a cross ice pass from Joe Fruin to put the Hawks up by two. After the Eagles
closed the gap to one, Mike Giles and Joe Scerba would each score to put the Iowa
lead back at three. With under a minute remaining sophomore Joe Fruin would add
an unassisted goal of his own to finish off a period completely dominated by the
Hawkeyes.

The IceHawks might have grown a little too comfortable with their four goal lead as
they would falter slightly in the second period and go scoreless while racking up 5
penalties that forced the Hawks to play nearly half of the period short-handed. The
numerous power plays presented the Eagles with plenty of opportunities and they
capitalized by scoring twice to get back into the game. Iowa went into the locker room
after playing one of their worst periods of the young 2005 season but they regrouped
well and came out strong in the third.

Two minutes into the final period of play UI sophomore JP Cadorin scored his first
goal of the season to put Iowa's lead back at three. Kevin Lorenz would then win the
face off at center ice and head into Robert Morris' zone to score a goal of his own
thanks to great passing by Jamie Elliott and Joe Fruin not 30 seconds later. These
two early goals set the tempo for the period and Iowa would dominate the remainder
of the game. Iowa would make a mental mistake to give Robert Morris another goal
with 12 minutes remaining but Mike Giles would notch his second goal of the game
with five minutes left to make the final an 8-4 Iowa victory.

On Saturday the scoring again opened with Iowa as Tyler Schultz received a pass
from Kyle Norris at the point and ripped a shot right into the net. The Eagles would
then tie it up just a minute later, but would lose the lead on a goal by Rees O'Donnell
after Matt Winkler made a play to keep the puck in Iowa's offensive zone. Robert
Morris would then score again but Mike Giles would add another goal for Iowa before
the period was out to put the score at 3-2 at the end of one.

Once again the second period was a slow one for Iowa as they could not put any
points on the board. The period was relatively uneventful with few penalties and
Robert Morris notching the only goal 13 minutes into the period to make the game
even at 3-3.

After allowing Robert Morris to tie the game in the second period the Hawks suffered
a mental lapse to begin the third and allowed the Eagles to score just 40 seconds
into the period. In the next 15 minutes Iowa repeatedly came close to scoring the
tying goal but they could not manage to get the puck past the Eagle's goaltender.

Finally, with just four minutes remaining the Hawks would catch a break as Robert
Morris was hit with two penalties to give Iowa a 5 on 3 advantage. The Hawks didn't
waste this opportunity and Craig Bagdon positioned himself in front of the Robert
Morris net and wound up tipping the puck in for a score to tie the game with three
and a half minutes remaining. Only a minute later a Robert Morris defensive
breakdown would leave Iowa defenseman Ken Galinski with nobody between him and
the Eagles' net. Galinksi made the most of his opportunity as he scored on the break
away to put Iowa up for good. Galinski was mobbed by his teammates on the ice and
before the game was over Iowa Captain Mike Coleman would score another goal to
secure the win and cap an emotional Iowa comeback.

*Notes: Iowa Assistant Captain Jimmy Hayes missed this weekend's series due to
illness and Andy Arreguin missed due to personal matters. Keith High and Brian Paro
came off of the Iowa reserve roster to  fill-in for the two missing players...    Iowa has
scored first in every game it has played in so far this season...   The IceHawks will
take on conference opponent Illinois State on Friday at 9PM and after the
Iowa-Michigan football game on Black Out Saturday at 4:45, come support your
Hawks!
