IceHawks Undefeated No More
The UI Hockey team was steam rolled by Iowa State's Division One team this past
weekend as they were handed their first losses of the season and outscored by an
combined total of 22-5 in two games. This past weekend's games marked the first
time in ACHA history in which the two teams met on the ice for the Iowa-ISU rivalry
and things could not have gone much worse for the Hawkeyes.

On Friday the Hawks were able to stay with nationally ranked #5 ISU for most of the
first period despite being outplayed by a quicker and more prepared Cyclone team.
This was largely because of the outstanding play of UI Goaltender Tim Strauch who
held the Cyclones at bay until they finally got one past him with 3:28 remaining in the
period. Less than a minute later the Cyclones would score again and the period
would end with Iowa State up by two. This marked the first period of the 2005 season
in which the Hawkeyes did not put a goal on the board and they would go scoreless
for the last two periods as well as the Hawks were shut out for the first time since
November 2003 by a final score of 10-0. Iowa was outshot in the game by a final
margin of 65-18.

Things looked like they were going to be the same again on Saturday as Iowa State
scored 4 goals in the first period, with all of them coming on power plays to go up big
early. The Hawks fought back in the second however and notched their first goals of
the series against ISU but were still outscored 5-4 and the period ended with the
Hawks down by 5. Once again nearly all of the Iowa State goals came on special
teams as Iowa showed they could play with the Cyclones as long as both sides were
at even strength. The Hawks were outscored big again in the third and the game
finished with a final score of 12-5 in favor of ISU to the disappointment of the home
crowd in Cedar Rapids. With their victory on Saturday the Cyclones earned the right
to take home the Iowa-Iowa State RoughRider Challenge Trophy that was presented
to ISU at the end of the game. The IceHawks hope to be more prepared for Iowa
State when the teams meet again next year in another battle for the RoughRider
Challenge Trophy.

*Notes: After goalie Tim Strauch faced over 50 shots in the first two periods on Friday
night he was removed from the game for goalie Dave Barwig...  Jimmy Hayes missed
the series and will continue to be out with mono... Kevin Lorenz was suspended from
Friday nights game due to a head butting penalty last weekend... The IceHawks will
take on the McKendree University Bearcats this weekend at McKendree.
