Hawkeyes Head into Break on Winning Note
The University of Iowa IceHawks faced off against conference rival Eastern Illinois this
past weekend at Coral Ridge Ice Arena in a re-match of last years MACHA
Conference championship game. The two game series was touted as a possible
playoff preview as EIU and Iowa are both MACHA playoff favorites and the games
were expected to be close and hard fought. Instead, Iowa opened up the series with
a blowout of the Panthers.

On Friday night the scoring opened up with Iowa once again as center Kevin Lorenz
put the Hawkeyes on the board just 1:12 into the game on a pass from Matt Winkler.
Eastern would bounce right back and score only 22 seconds after Lorenz's goal to
knot the contest at 1. The Hawks would find themselves on top again just four
minutes into the period as Winker notched a goal of his own on a pass from linemate
Joe Fruin. The Panthers would tie it up again a little more than two minutes later as
Eastern managed to get a shot past Iowa netminder Tim Strauch on a rebound. The
goal would be Eastern's last for the night as Strauch and the Hawkeyes would clamp
down and dominate EIU for the remainder of the game. Before the first period was
out Iowa would tally two more scores as defenseman Alex Gillaspie notched his first
goal of the season and Mike Giles put in his 13th.

The second and third periods would be all Hawkeyes as well as Mike Giles scored his
second of the game just 1:15 into period number two. Six minutes later Joe Scerba
increased the Iowa lead to four on a pass from defenseman Tyler Schultz. The
IceHawks would get their seventh only 55 seconds later as Matt Winkler scored after
Rees O'Donnell intercepted an EIU cross ice pass. After scoring 7 times in just under
30 minutes the Panther coaching staff removed goaltender Nick Maggio from the
game. The IceHawks would only get one score past his replacement as Jamie Elliott
and Mike Giles assisted a Kyle Norris goal with only 2 minutes remaining in the game
to give the IceHAwks an 8-2 conference victory.

The Hawks looked like they were heading towards the same type of win on Saturday
afternoon as they led by four goals after the first period. For the first time in a
conference game Iowa did not score first as the Hawks fell behind 2 minutes and 49
seconds into the game on an EIU score. But the Hawkeyes would come back and a
minute and a half later Iowa's Mike Giles scored on a pass from Kyle Norris to tie the
game at one. JP Cadorin would get the lead for the IceHawks on a pass from Rees
O'Donnell at 13:52 and Mike Giles would increase that lead to two on a pass from
Cadorin just a minute later. Before the period was over Jamie Elliott would score on a
pass from Alex Gillaspie and then Gillaspie would proceed to score a goal of his own
to give Iowa a 5-1 lead after the first.

The Panthers fought back and despite Iowa dominating the game's tempo they
managed to get shots past UI goalie Tim Strauch at 14:00 and 10:29 in the second
period to make it a 5-3 game. This is the closest Eastern came as Matt Winkler
recieved a pass from Joe Fruin with 52 seconds remaining in the period and put it
past the Eastern goaltender to make the score 6-3 in favor of the Hawkeyes. After
being outscored 2-1 in the second Iowa came back out and completely controlled the
third as they allowed only 4 shots on goal by Eastern. However, the Hawks couldn't
manage to get one by the Panther goalie and the game ended with a 6-3 victory for
the Haweyes.

The two victories improved Iowa's conference record to 8-0-1 which gives them 17
points out of a possible 18 and puts them just a single point behind first-place
Depaul. The Hawks will have the next two weekends off for Thanksgiving/Fall break
and will return to the ice the weekend of December 2nd when they face off against
the Southern Illinois Cougars in Coralville.

*Notes: Iowa assistant captain James Hayes missed the EIU series due to Mono, he is
expected to return against SIU and was replaced by Keith high off the reserve
roster...  UI defenseman Kenny Galinski was suspended from Saturday's game after
being ejected for fighting with 44 seconds remaining on Friday night... A few pictures
from Saturday's game are available on the
multimedia page...  The Hawks will next
face SIUE at 9PM on December 2nd at Coral Ridge Ice Arena.
