Major Snowstorm Causes McKendree to Cancel
The first major snowstorm of the 06-07 winter forced a plane off a runway at
Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, canceled hundreds of flights, and shuttered
schools and businesses across the Midwest on Friday. Officials say that the storm
has additionaly left almost 350 thousand customers without power in eastern
Missouri. The storm has also caused the McKendree College Bearcats, who are
located in St. Louis, to cancel their trip to Iowa City to take on the Iowa Hockey team.
The Hawkeyes were scheduled to play the Bearcats tonight at 9:15 PM in a rematch
of last years MACHA Playoffs where the Bearcats upset the second seed Iowa
Hawkeyes by the score of 6-4. Iowa and McKendree were also supposed to face off
tomorrow at 4:45 PM, with both games being played at Coral Ridge Ice Arena.
While no snow has been dropped on Iowa City, some parts of St. Louis have
received upwards of 12 inches and the snow and ice has forced the closure of
Interstate 70. McKendree officials deemed that it would be extraordinarily difficult for
the Bearcats to make it out of St. Louis and meet their time obligations and that the
trip from St. Louis to Iowa City in the midst of a mid-western blizzard would be too
unsafe for the team to make. It has not yet been decided if the games will be
rescheduled. Please stay tuned to www.hawkeyeshockey.com for more information
as it becomes available.
