Iowa tops Mizzou in MACHA Playoffs.
Despite being swept by the University of Missouri in the regular season the Hawkeyes
bested the Tigers Friday night at the MACHA Tournament in Springfield, Mo. The
Tigers and Hawkeyes were tied at one goal each heading into the third period until
the University of Iowa scored two goals in less than a minute to take the lead. By
taking a 3-1 lead with 18 minutes remaining in the game the Hawks put undefeated
Mizzou in a position they had not been in all season long.

To protect their lead in the final period the Hawks switched to a different type of
game, dumping the puck whenever they crossed center ice, and taking icing calls
when needed to get the puck out of their zone. With time running out and a victory
nearing Missouri pulled their goalie and managed to score 6 on 5 to cut the Iowa lead
to one with just over a minute remaining. Missouri left their net unnatended in a last
ditch effort to tie the game. The Tigers turned the puck over on their own blue line
due to Hawkeye forward Joe Scerba's efforts and Senior Nate Garehty scored on the
empty net to seal the victory for the Hawkeyes.

In their win the Hawks were outshot by Missouri  by the monstrous margin of 44 to17.
Iowa remained in the game and was able to win thanks to the determined play of
goalie Tim Strauch. The Hawkeyes played hard and back-checked even harder to
make sure that the play of Strauch would not be wasted with a loss. The Hawkeyes
played as a team when it mattered most and now they will face Eastern Illinois in the
MACHA Championship tomorrow.
