Iowa Wins MACHA Silver
After defeating the University of Missouri in the conference semi-finals the Hawks
advanced to play the Eastern Illinois University Panthers in a rematch of last year's
MACHA Conference Silver Championship. Last season the Hawkeyes lead going into
the third period of the championship, but allowed Eastern to tie the game and force
overtime. The Hawks were not able to prevail a season ago as they fell to the
Panthers and took second in the conference.
During the regular season Eastern Illinois was the only conference opponent other
than Missouri to sweep Iowa two games to none. However, this game was different.
The Hawkeyes came out hard and set the pace for the game. Despite being scored
on first the Hawks battled back and tied it up. The second period went scoreless and
the Hawks entered the third tied at 1-1 and the game looked like it might head for
overtime for the second year in a row. However, the Hawks fought their way to two
goals in a row before being scored on again to cut their lead to 1. With time going
fast in the third period Hawkeye senior Nate Gaherty scored to put Eastern away for
good.
The victory is Iowa's first-ever MACHA Championship, and it represents a level of
success that the Hawks will be looking to build on next season. The Hawks are
fortunate to only lose three seniors to graduation. First year coach Kevin Harter will
be returning behind the bench for the 05-06 season, along with a majority of the
current championship team. Unfortunately, despite their championship, the Hawks
head into the off-season without making the ACHA DII Central rankings. This is
something Iowa will be looking to turn around in seasons to come, as they only hope
to advance their level of play. Stay tuned to hawkeyehockey.com for further updates
on the Hawks this off-season!
