Chaz Lucius, a young hockey talent and Winnipeg Jets prospect, has announced his retirement from professional hockey at just 21 years old. Lucius made this emotional decision after being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a rare medical condition that affects the body’s joints and connective tissues.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Lucius, who hails from Lawrence, Kansas, was a first-round pick by the Winnipeg Jets in the 2021 NHL Draft. He was seen as a rising star with great potential. Over the past two seasons, he played for the Manitoba Moose in the AHL and briefly for the WHL’s Portland Winterhawks.
However, injuries kept holding him back. He went through multiple joint injuries and surgeries, including two major shoulder surgeries. This season, Lucius played 25 games and scored nine points before his health problems forced him to stop playing once again. His last game was on February 9.
What Is Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
In a statement posted by Newport Sports, Lucius explained that he has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a hereditary disorder that weakens the body’s connective tissues. This condition makes the joints more prone to injury and makes it harder for the body to heal from physical strain.
Lucius shared how the diagnosis changed everything for him:
“I thought I was just unlucky with injuries. But now I understand my body, affected by EDS, simply can’t handle the physical nature of hockey. I’ve been medically advised not to continue playing.”
Support from the Winnipeg Jets and Family
The Winnipeg Jets released a heartfelt statement, fully supporting Lucius in his decision to retire:
“After much discussion with Chaz, his family, and medical experts, we support his difficult decision. We wish him the best and hope he becomes a strong advocate for EDS awareness.”
Lucius thanked the Jets organization, especially Mark Chipman, Kevin Cheveldayoff, Craig Heisinger, and team doctors and staff. He also mentioned development coach Mike Keane for constantly checking in on him during his hard times.
Achievements Before Retirement
Despite his short career, Lucius had some memorable moments. He played one season at the University of Minnesota, scoring 19 points in 24 games. He also represented Team USA at the 2022-23 World Junior Championship, scoring five goals and seven points in seven games. One of his biggest highlights was a hat trick in the bronze medal game against Sweden, where the U.S. won 8-7 in overtime.

Lucius ended his statement on a hopeful note:
“I feel blessed to have experienced all that hockey gave me, even though I’m crushed that I can’t continue my NHL dream. I now look forward to being an advocate for those living with EDS and embracing what’s ahead.”
