Tara Zollinger, one of the most successful field hockey coaches in NCAA Division II history, is now taking the next big step in her career. After leading Shippensburg University’s field hockey program for seven seasons, Zollinger has been named the new head coach at the University of Delaware. The Blue Hens officially announced the news through a press release on March 17, with Zollinger stepping into her new role on March 26.
A New Opportunity at Delaware
The University of Delaware’s head coach position became available in early February after longtime coach Rolf van de Kerkhof stepped down. Now, the program will be guided by a coach who knows how to win championships and develop both players and teams.
Zollinger is excited to start this new journey. “I am incredibly honored and excited to join the University of Delaware,” she said. “Delaware field hockey has a strong tradition, and I look forward to continuing that legacy with our student-athletes and staff.”
Historic Success at Shippensburg
Zollinger took over as head coach at Shippensburg University in 2017. In just her first two seasons, she made history by winning back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships in 2017 and 2018. She became the first coach to win titles in both her first and second years as a collegiate head coach.
Over her time with the Raiders, Zollinger coached her team to a 118-25 overall record and led them to six NCAA tournament appearances. Her teams also claimed two PSAC Championships, including a perfect 20-0 season in 2021, and added a second PSAC title in 2024, her final season.
Impact On and Off the Field
Zollinger’s impact at Shippensburg was not limited to the field. She helped her players grow academically and personally. Jeff Michaels, Director of Athletics at SU, praised her efforts: “Tara did an exceptional job during her time at Ship. Her teams were not just successful in matches, but also in the classroom and in the community.”
Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Carrie Michaels, also shared her appreciation and wished her well. “I’m now officially a Blue Hens field hockey fan,” she said.
Developing Players and Building a Culture
During her time at SU, Zollinger coached 23 All-American players and 41 All-PSAC athletes. Her coaching style focused on discipline, hard work, and team spirit. She created a culture where players could grow both as athletes and as people.
Zollinger thanked the entire Shippensburg community in her farewell. “I’m forever grateful to the student-athletes, coaches, and staff I worked with. Their commitment helped me become the coach I am today,” she said.
What’s Next for Shippensburg?
With Zollinger moving on, Shippensburg University has already started looking for her replacement. The position for head field hockey coach was posted on the university’s job site on March 20. The next coach will have big shoes to fill but will inherit a strong and successful program.
Tara Zollinger leaves behind a legacy of success, leadership, and inspiration at Shippensburg University. With three national titles, two PSAC championships, and countless lives impacted, she now moves to the University of Delaware with high hopes and great energy.
As she steps into this new chapter, both universities are looking forward to what lies ahead. For now, Delaware has gained a proven winner, and Shippensburg begins a new journey.
