Klouček, aged 45, passed away on Sunday after colliding with a power pole while skiing at a popular resort. Tomáš Klouček died at the scene after hitting a power pole while skiing in Špindlerův Mlýn, a well-known ski resort near the Polish border in northern Czechia. The accident happened on the edge of a slope, and Czech media confirmed that he was pronounced dead on-site.
His wife later confirmed the heartbreaking news in a post on Instagram, and his former team Oceláři Třinec also paid tribute to him on social media.
NHL Career and Hockey Journey
Born in Prague, Klouček began his hockey journey with Slavia Prague, a local club where he developed as a strong, physical defenseman. He was drafted in the fifth round of the 1998 NHL Draft by the New York Rangers, selected 151st overall.
He moved to Canada to play junior hockey for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in the QMJHL, where he adapted quickly to North American ice.
Between 2000 and 2006, Klouček played 141 NHL games across three teams: the New York Rangers, Nashville Predators, and Atlanta Thrashers. During his NHL career, he recorded 2 goals and 8 assists, with a total of 10 points and a high 250 penalty minutes, showing his tough, physical style of play.
A Career Beyond the NHL
When not playing in the NHL, Klouček spent time in the AHL, playing for affiliate teams in Hartford, Milwaukee, and Chicago.
After leaving the NHL, Klouček continued his career across Europe. From 2007 to 2017, he played in leagues in Czechia, the KHL, and Slovakia, eventually finishing his career with two seasons at Epinal, a French club.
