Stan Fischler, famously known as “The Maven,” just turned 93 on March 31, and he’s still actively writing about hockey. He started his journey in the 1954-55 season, covering the New York Rangers, and he hasn’t stopped since. It’s been 70 years, and he’s still sharing his passion for the game.
A Lifetime of Hockey Writing
Fischler’s first big break came when Ken McKenzie, co-founder of The Hockey News, reached out to him. Since then, he’s been a regular name in the hockey world. Over the decades, he has written thousands of articles, making him one of the most respected voices in the sport.
His writing career earned him several honors, including a spot in both the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame and the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame. In 2007, he received the NHL’s Lester Patrick Trophy, which recognizes those who have greatly helped the growth of hockey in the United States.
A Broadcasting Legend
Apart from writing, Fischler also worked in television for over 40 years. He covered teams like the Hartford Whalers, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and New Jersey Devils. His work earned him seven Emmy Awards – a big achievement in the world of TV.
A Special Tribute from the Islanders
In 2022, the New York Islanders honored Fischler by naming their press level at the UBS Arena after him. This area also features his old articles, hockey gear, and photos from his long career. He even donated his huge collection of hockey books – over 90 in total – to the team.
Still Passionate at 93
Even at 93, Fischler is not slowing down. He still writes about the Rangers for The Hockey News and often shares multiple articles each day. In his birthday column this year, he wrote, “What surprises me the most is that I’ve never gotten tired of talking or writing about hockey.”
Many fans and fellow sports figures praised him on his birthday. Howie Rose, a well-known New York Mets commentator, posted, “This man is a phenomenon… His love for hockey always shone through.”
Fischler also shared his thanks online, writing, “A million thanks to all for the happy birthday wishes. It’s on to 94, but gotta enjoy 93 for a dozen months.”
Stan Fischler’s journey is truly inspiring. From his first job in the 1950s to today, he has shown unmatched dedication to the sport of hockey. His passion, energy, and love for the game continue to make him a key voice in the hockey world. At 93, he’s not just a legend – he’s a living part of hockey history, and he’s still writing it every day.
